Huntsville, Ala. – The GMC team celebrated a major milestone this week with the “topping out” of NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center Test Stand 4693 (TS4693). TS4693 is the only structure of its kind and will be utilized to static test the core stage of NASA’s Space Launch System, which will be the most powerful rocket ever built. GMC was responsible for the design of the foundation on which this 22-stories-tall mass of steel rests. TS4693 is being built via the guidance of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which awarded the $45.3 million contract to Brasfield & Gorrie General Contractors.
Members of the GMC-Merrick team, including Doug Elledge and Jennifer Speers (Merrick) and GMC’s Jennifer Landry, Greg Edrington and Stephen Karas were present at the event. Greg is the Foundation Engineer of Record and Jennifer Speers is the Superstructure Engineer of Record.
GMC structural engineers signed the last beam with the following inscription before it was raised to the top of the structure:
EVERY GREAT STRUCTURE REQUIRES A GOOD FOUNDATION.
